# Set the Start Day of the Week for the Shift Job Calendar and Overtime

## Set the day your week starts on the Shift Job Calendar and for weekly overtime in Enginehire, with a Thursday to Wednesday payroll week as an example.

Not every agency runs payroll on a Monday to Sunday week. Enginehire has two settings for this. One sets the first day of each week on the Shift Job Calendar, and the other sets the day each week begins when overtime is calculated. Setting both to the same day keeps the weeks you see on the calendar in line with the weeks overtime is counted over. This article shows where both settings are, what each one changes, and how a Thursday to Wednesday payroll week works in practice.

### Where to find the week start day settings

Go to **More → Global Settings** and click the **Jobs** tab. To find both settings quickly, type **start day** in the search box at the top of the page.

**Select start day of week in Shift Job Calendar**, in the **Shift Job Calendar** section, sets the first day shown in each week of the calendar. **Start day of week to calculate OT**, in the **Shift Job Table View** section, sets the day each overtime week begins. If you don't choose a day for this setting, overtime weeks start on Monday.

Choose a day from each dropdown. The settings save automatically. To remove a selection, click **Clear** under that setting.

How the start day changes the Shift Job Calendar

In **Week** view, each week begins on the day you chose. With Thursday selected, every week on the calendar runs from Thursday to Wednesday.

If your agency has renamed the Shift Job Calendar, it appears in the navigation bar under your own name. See [Customize dashboard terms](https://learn.enginehire.io/en/knowledge/customize-dashboard-terms-word-used-for-candidate-client-shift-job-calendar-and-placement?hsLang=en) for how those names are set.

### How the start day changes overtime calculations

Weekly overtime is counted over a seven-day period that begins on the day you choose. Hours worked from that day through the following six days count toward the same week, and the count starts over on that same day the next week. This decides which hours appear as **Regular** and which appear as **OT** in the Shift Job Calendar **Table** view, under **Summary by Candidates**.

Example: a Thursday to Wednesday payroll week

In this example, overtime starts after 40 hours in a week and the overtime start day is set to Thursday. A candidate works an 8-hour shift every day from Thursday, June 4 through Thursday, June 11, for 64 hours in total.

Thursday, June 4 through Wednesday, June 10 is one overtime week with 56 hours. The first 40 hours are regular, and the remaining 16 hours, worked on Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10, are overtime. Thursday, June 11 starts a new week, so its 8 hours are regular again. Summary by Candidates shows 48 regular hours and 16 overtime hours.

The daily breakdown for the candidate shows where the overtime falls: 8 overtime hours on Tuesday, June 9 and on Wednesday, June 10, and regular hours again on Thursday, June 11.

With the default Monday start, the same shifts would fall into two different weeks. Thursday, June 4 through Sunday, June 7 would count toward one week with 32 hours, and Monday, June 8 through Thursday, June 11 toward the next, also with 32 hours. Neither week passes 40 hours, so none of those hours would count as weekly overtime. This is why the overtime start day should match the week your agency actually pays on.

### Tips for setting your payroll week

Set both settings to the same day so the weeks on your calendar match the weeks used for overtime. After changing the overtime start day, open Summary by Candidates for a recent week and check that the Regular and OT hours match how you pay.
